    Description

      Description

Currently in Xray Cloud, Test Types (Manual, Generic, Cucumber, etc.) can be managed at the project level. There is no granular permission control that allows organizations to centrally govern Test Types while restricting modifications based on user roles.

Organizations that require standardized Test Types across all projects need the ability to control who can manage or modify them.

      User friction

Currently in Xray Cloud, Test Types (Manual, Generic, Cucumber, etc.) can be managed at the project level. There is no granular permission control that allows organizations to centrally govern Test Types while restricting modifications based on user roles.

Organizations that require standardized Test Types across all projects need the ability to control who can manage or modify them.

Steps to reproduce (right now) / Actual Result:

      1. Navigate to Test Type configuration within a project.
      1. Modify or manage existing Test Types (Manual, Generic, Cucumber, etc.).

      Actual Result:
Test Types can be modified at the project level without centralized restriction.

      Expected Result:
The ability to restrict Test Type management based on user roles, ensuring Test Types are governed centrally and cannot be modified without appropriate global-level permissions.

      IMPACT

      What would improve if solved

      • Enables centralized governance of Test Types.
      • Ensures consistency and standardization across projects.
      • Reduces configuration drift between projects.
      • Supports enterprise-level compliance and process control.

      Impact on stakeholders

      • Organizations managing multiple projects.
      • Teams requiring standardized testing frameworks.
      • Governance and compliance stakeholders ensure configuration control.

Occurs whenever standardized Test Types must be enforced across projects.

      Current workaround:

      • Relying on internal governance policies and manual monitoring.
      • Limiting role assignments administratively.
      • Periodic reviews to ensure Test Types remain aligned with global standards.

There is currently no built-in mechanism to restrict Test Type management based on user roles.

      CONTEXT & EXAMPLES:

Concrete example: An organization defines a fixed set of Test Types to be used globally. Without role-based restrictions, changes can be made at the project level, resulting in inconsistencies in reporting, automation, and governance processes.

      Workaround risk: N/A
