Description
Description
When creating a new Test issue directly from a Story in Xray Cloud, there is no option to select the target Test Repository folder during creation. The repository path only becomes available after the test case has been created because Jira and Xray Cloud operate as separate applications.
In contrast, Xray Data Center allows users to specify the desired Test Repository folder during test case creation, making the workflow significantly more efficient.
User Friction
After creating a test case from a Story in Xray Cloud, testers must first complete the Xray-specific fields. They then need to leave the Test issue, navigate to the Test Repository, locate the newly created test case, and manually move it to the appropriate folder.
These additional context switches interrupt the workflow and increase the effort required to organize test cases.
Steps to Reproduce (Current Behavior) / Actual Result
Xray Cloud
- Create a Story.
- Create a Test issue from the Story.
- Look for an option to select the Test Repository folder during test creation.
Actual Result:
No option is available to choose the target Test Repository folder.
Impact
In Xray Cloud, testers must manually locate the newly created test case in the Test Repository before moving it to the correct folder. This becomes increasingly difficult when multiple team members are creating test cases simultaneously within the same project, as it is often unclear which test case was created most recently.
The additional manual steps reduce efficiency and increase the likelihood of misplaced or overlooked test cases.
What Would Improve if Solved
A possible improvement would be to automatically highlight or pre-select the newly created test case when the user opens the Test Repository.
An even better solution would be to provide the ability to select the target Test Repository folder during test case creation, matching the functionality available in Xray Data Center.
Once the test case has been placed in the correct folder, testers can continue defining the test steps, complete the internal review process, and finally approve the test case for execution.
Impact on Stakeholders
The current workflow introduces unnecessary context switching and manual effort. For projects with a large number of Stories and Test cases, these additional steps noticeably reduce productivity and make test case management more time-consuming.
Current Workaround
Testers must manually search for the newly created Test case in the Test Repository and then move it into the appropriate folder.
This workaround becomes increasingly inefficient when several users are creating Test cases concurrently, as identifying the newly created test case can be difficult.
Context & Examples
Concrete Example
When projects are largely requirements-driven and use User Stories as the basis for development and testing. Test cases are created directly from these Stories to maintain clear traceability between business requirements and their corresponding tests.
In Xray Cloud, after creating a Test issue from a Story, testers must first complete the Xray-specific fields. They then need to switch to the Test Repository to manually organize the newly created test case.
Because Jira and Xray Cloud function as separate applications, the Test Repository folder cannot be selected during test creation. Xray Data Center provides a more streamlined experience by allowing the repository path to be specified at creation time.
When multiple testers are working in the same project, manually locating the newly created test case becomes increasingly difficult, adding unnecessary effort to an otherwise straightforward workflow.
Workaround Risk
The current workaround is manual, time-consuming, and inefficient. As project size and team collaboration increase, the additional effort required to organize test cases negatively impacts productivity and the overall testing workflow.
